2421 Overview of the Sequence Rules

MPEP SECTION SUMMARY

This section includes an overview of the sequence rules. The sequence rules define a set of symbols and procedures that must be followed when the application involves a sequence listing.

Essentially, the sequence rules state that the proper symbols must be used and the sequence must be sent in computer readable form.

  • The rules apply to all sequences in an application, even if they are not claimed.

The sequence rules embrace all unbranched nucleotide sequences with ten or more nucleotide bases and all unbranched, non-D amino acid sequences with four or more amino acids, provided that there are at least 10 “specifically defined” nucleotides or 4 “specifically defined” or amino acids.

If the sequence rules are not followed, a notice will be sent to the applicant that sets at least a 30-day period for reply.

One application may contain more than one nucleotide or amino acid sequence within it.
