Module III: Application Filing

Now that we've gone through the different application types as well as the contents of a patent application, we'll finally start covering the actual filing of a patent application. Module III covers application filing.

 

Introduction to Application Filing

This module will provide you with detailed knowledge on topics such as who has access to an application, the fees, power of attorney, mailing procedures, and several other essential points dealing with patent application filing.

Lesson 1: Access

The goal of this video is to teach you who has access to an application including the rights the public has to inspect different application types and who has the authority to grant access to applications.

Lesson 2: Filing Dates

The date the PTO receives a particular patent application is a critical date to remember. The goal of this video is to cover filing dates, including when an application is complete enough to receive a filing date.

Lesson 3: Priority Claims

Under certain conditions and on fulfilling certain requirements, a later-filed application for patent filed in the United States may claim the benefit of, or priority to, a prior application filed in the United States. This video aims to cover the rules surrounding claiming the benefit of an earlier-filed domestic application.

Lesson 7: Fees

The goal of this video is to provide a primer on USPTO fees and how they may be paid. In addition, you will see that there are a lot of fees a patent applicant can incur.

Lesson 8: Small Entity Status

The goal of this training video explains the requirements necessary to meet small entity status. Small entity status is determined by the size of the group that invented the subject matter. Independent inventors, small businesses, and nonprofit organizations like universities all qualify for small entity status.

In addition to small entity status, the USPTO more recently established a 75% micro entity discount. The 75% micro entity discount first became available on March 19, 2013. The goal of this training video is to explain the requirements necessary to meet micro entity status.
